My First Semester: Advice from College Students to High School Students will be written by current college undergraduate students giving advice to American high school Juniors and Seniors on what to expect during their first semester of college. The book will consist of a series of short essays focusing on a specific piece of advice inspired by the author's experience as a first semester college student. Completed manuscripts can be submitted to info@ehipassikopress.org until 1 June 2024. However, interested authors are encouraged to first send an email in which they briefly state the advice on which they plan to focus. Instead of selecting topics that we think would be interesting and soliciting essays on those topics, we want to see what you think is important.

Manuscript Requirements

Your essay should be between 500 and 1,500 words and focus on some specific piece of advice inspired by your experience. We are especially interested in your author voice, a voice that reflects your unique experiences and insights about the topic about which you are writing. However, you are encouraged to cite research as appropriate, but we are not interested in formal research papers.

If you use the thoughts, words, or ideas of someone else, please provide proper documentation. We will accept documentation and manuscripts in any style (e.g. MLA, APA, and others).

Submissions Guidelines

An Initial Inquiry in which you briefly state the advice on which you plan to focus is optional but encouraged. In your query, please include your full name, college, year in college, and telephone number. This will allow us to begin a dialogue with you during which we can coach you about your essay.

Final manuscripts must be in Microsoft (.docx format) and can be mailed to info@ehipassikopress.org. If you did not submit an initial inquiry, you need to include your full name, college, year in college, and telephone number with the submission.

Because you will eventually need to sign a contract with Ehipassiko Press, if you are under 18 years of age, please include your age as well as a contact email address and name for a parent/guardian. We will need to contact your parent/guardian to obtain their permission to correspond with you.

Glossary

As part of My First Semester, we will include a glossary. We would appreciate it if you would email us a term(s) you didn't understand or a concept that could have been better explained to you. You can send these terms/concepts to info@ehipassikopress.org.

Compensation

Ehipassiko Press has no income stream. We provide our books for free online. Paperback editions are available through Amazon at cost of production. Neither our authors nor the press receive royalties or any other compensation for our publications. Details of our publishing philosophy can be found on our website.

Publication Date

In order to give enough time to work with the authors of selected manuscripts, our tentative publication date is May 2025. However, we would prefer to publish earlier. Please note that this call for papers is not a competition. We will coach you if you send an Initial Inquiry and we will not wait until the deadline to begin accepting essays. Early submissions are encouraged. Once we have enough quality essays for the book, we will stop accepting submissions. Although we encourage you to submit a proposal and will work with you while you develop your essay, we will only accept completed essays.
