Advantages for Organizations
Publishing Through Ehipassiko Press
As an organization or college, you might have neither the capacity nor desire to go into the publishing business. But you or someone in your organization might have developed quality material that you would like to see published as a book.
Publishing your Open Educational Resource (OER) through Ehipassiko Press provides you with several advantages:
Assist Others: Ultimately, OERs are published to provide a service. By publishing a book, you might be better able to reach the people who you are trying to assist. By working with us, you might be able to develop a very useful book from a collection of handouts you developed. Or, using the reflective journal model, you might be able to help someone develop skills they need for success.
Generate Publicity: If someone from your organization—or the organization itself—publishes a book through Ehipassiko Press, you can generate publicity at the time of publication as well as when you continue to use the book. We can also provide some information about your organization or college in the book itself. For example, in the books published in our "A Dhamma Talk and Reflective Journal Series," we include a page in the back of the book promoting the services of the monastery where the monk lives. We could provide a similar page for your organization or college.
Additional Credibility: We know that your organization or college is more well known than Ehipassiko Press. However, there are still advantages in terms of added credibility in publishing through us, something spelled out in more detail in our section on Advantages to Individuals.
Save Time, Money, and Resources: The cost of having a dedicated staff member to handle book publishing for your organization is too expensive unless you plan to go into high volume publishing. The skill set for publishing makes it unrealistic for a small organization to maintain a volunteer responsible for its publishing ventures. We have the experience required for formatting books for both online and paperback publication, assigning an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) to your publication, registering the ISBN so that your book is listed in Books in Print, and other tasks associated with publishing.
Low Cost for Paperback Editions: Even when an online edition is available, an organization or college might want to purchase copies of a book to distribute to students, clients, colleagues, community members, or others. Although there is a cost for purchasing paperback editions of our books, Ehipassiko Press makes no income on sales of out books through Amazon. Customers pay only cost of production. Therefore, it might be less expensive for your organization or college to publish through Ehipassiko Press and then purchase books through Amazon than it would be to have paperbacks printed yourself. This is especially true because Amazon books are print on demand so you won't have the costs associated with a large production run or having books in storage.
Showcase Student Work: Because of the positive educational value to students, we are open to publishing anthologies of student created writing or art. Not only are these anthologies valuable to student learning, they are a good way to promote your students and your programs in the local community.
Although there are benefits to publishing through Ehipassiko Press, please realize that there are some things that we cannot do.
No Organization or College Specific Books: We cannot publish a book that is specific to your organization or college. For example, we are not able to publish a lab manual that is designed just for your students, a manual that would list specific room numbers or policies unique to your college. However, we can publish a lab manuel for a general audience that can then be personalized for your campus. This is the model that we are using for A Skillful Approach to College Research.
Books Need to Fit Our Publication Goals and Values: Ehipassiko Press' founder wrote a book on small teaching. He is currently looking for another publisher for it because we turned the book down. Although the book does deal with education, it doesn't have the reflective journaling element we look for in most of our publications. It's a good book, just not a good book for us. Because we want to make sure that your idea fits our press, we ask that you send us a query to gage our interest before sending us a completed manuscript.
