Advantages for Individuals
Publishing Through Ehipassiko Press
Publishing your Open Educational Resource (OER) through Ehipassiko Press provides you with several advantages:
Credibility: Paperback books are viewed as "real" books while online books often aren't. This isn't right, but the bias does exist. By publishing your OER through Ehipassiko Press, you will have a "real" book because we will publish a paperback edition as well as the online edition or your book. There is also a bias against self-published books. We might be small and, as of now, fairly unknown. But we are a real publisher.
We will work with you: First book? Not sure what to do? Don't worry. We enjoy working with new as well as established authors. Your initial query will start a conversation during which we will provide you with support to develop your idea and polish your manuscript. Unfortunately, we cannot accept all queries we receive. Some might not fit our goals as a press. Or we might not have the capacity to take on another project at the moment. But, if we accept your idea, we will work closely with you to provide the support you need.
Save Time and Money: Although you could learn to self publish your book, there is a learning curve and costs, especially if you want to secure an ISBN for your publication and have it registered with R.R. Bowker, the official ISBN agency for the United States so that it is listed in Books in Print. We have been through that learning curve. Because we already know the process of publishing a paperback and have an established account with Bowker, we can save you much time, effort, and costs.
Providing an ISBN: The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique identifier for your book. The ISBN allows your customers--which includes individuals, libraries, and others--to know that they are purchasing the exact book that they desire. An ISBN is required to have your book listed in books in print. Currently, if you were to purchase an individual ISBN for your book, the cost is $125. Ehipassiko Press purchases blocks of ISBNs for a lower rate. As the publisher of your book, we assign and ISBN to your book at no cost to you. We will also register your book so that it appears in Books in Print.
You won't make any less money: If you are publishing an OER on your own, you are not going to make any money because you are not going to charge for your book. You won't get any royalties by publishing through Ehipassiko Press either. However, you will get credibility, save time/money, and obtain an ISBN. You will also be in the company of individuals who share your value of making quality materials available for free1.
1For the paperback editions of our books, we do ask the customer to pay for cost of production. We believe that asking that these costs be covered is in the spirit of not charging for OERs, especially because our books are all available online. Ehipassiko Press received no income from the "sale" of books on Amazon.
